Alzheimer's today is one of the leading causes of dementia and loss of independence in the elderly. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) can take a heavy toll on the caregiver, often resulting in very high stress and also depression. Each day brings new challenges as the caregiver copes with the changing levels of the disease and the different patterns of behaviour. Dressing, bathing, eating, basic activities of daily living often become difficult to manage for both the person with Alzheimer's Disease and the caregiver. It is important for families of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's to seek support and respite to help them through this very difficult time.

Maintain familiar routine with Care at Home

For a person that has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's the most effective treatment is to slow down the progress of the disease. The most important factor for your loved one is to remain in their familiar surroundings, such as their own home, and follow the same familiar daily routine. This allows them to feel in control and reduces their confusion. Familiar surroundings and routine are very critical in allowing your loved one to maintain their independence for as long as possible and in preventing a rapid decline in physical and mental ability to look after themselves.

At Cloverleaf Care we have a carefully prepared specialized Alzheimer's Care Program for our clients who have been diagnosed with the disease. Our specialized in-house training prepares our Home Care Aides (caregivers) to meet the unique needs and requirements of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's, while at the same time providing support and respite to family members.

Specialized services for Alzheimer's Care at Home

The following activities are specific to our Alzheimer's related care at home and delivered by specially trained and Alzheimer's care experienced Cloverleaf Care Home Care Aides:

  • Provide personal care and maintain daily hygiene (bathing, dental care, hair care, incontinent care, skin care, grooming, dressing).
  • Follow a structured daily routine (This helps maintain a sense of normalcy and reduces confusion).
  • Engage the senior in activities of daily living and help them succeed at familiar tasks (eating, dressing, help with preparing meals, washing dishes, folding clothes). The ability to do these tasks decreases as the disease progresses.
  • Engage the senior in activities that will help cognitive stimulation (watch news on TV, play cards, do a crossword puzzle, look at old photo albums, read the newspaper together). These kind of activities keep the brain active and help slow down the progression of the disease.
  • Assist with Sundowner Syndrome (give a bath, do a massage, take a walk, stay with the client during this time). Helping with these activities late in the day gives the family a break.
  • Provide a safe environment (protect from wandering or falls). Knowing that their loved one is safe at home gives family members peace of mind as well.

Our Specialized Alzheimer's Services for care at home are available hourly, or in one of our many packages. Whether your loved one needs regularly scheduled care or you need respite in caring for your loved one, we will provide you with quality care at home you can depend on and trust.
